Shipping Definitions

Bill of Lading (BOL)

Legal Definition: A document that establishes the terms of a contract between a shipper and a transportation company. It serves as a document of title, a contract of carriage and a receipt for goods.

Vendor Explanation: The BOL is the truck drivers verification of what he picks up and delivers. It should include the total cartons, weight, PO Numbers and department from the manifest pages.

Example:
PO 256789 Dept 120
NSC - 10 cartons 120lbs.
ECDC - 4 cartons 75lbs.
NMD - 2 cartons 48lbs.
------------------------
Total 16 cartons 242lbs.

Cube

To obtain cubic feet use the following equation: lenght x width x height = cube(inches)
If your measurements are in inches you will need to convert cubic inches to cubic feet by dividing cubic inches by 1728.

Example:
40" x 48" X 50" = 96,000 cubic inches
Divide 96,000 by 1728 (12" x 12" x 12") to get 55.555 cubic feet for a container or palette

If the shipment is over 749 cubic feet contact Neiman Marcus Traffic at 903-233-5536.

Less than Container Load

Abbreviation: LCL The quantity of freight which is less than that required for the application of a container load rate. Loose Freight.

Less than Truck Load

Abbreviation: LTL A term used if the quantity or volume of one or more consignment(s) does not fill a standard truck. Also known as LCL.

Oversize Carton

You must mark the shipment as oversize cartons on the BOL when shipping via a small package or "LTL" carrier. You must calculate weight using the following O/S defintion below.

Example: 5 cartons @OS2 - 70lbs x 5 cartons = 350lbs You cannot ship via small package carrier because you are now over the weight limit.

FedEx and UPS: A package weighing less than 30 lbs. and measuring more than 84 inches and equal to or less than 108 inches in combined length and girth will be classified as an Oversize 1 (OS1) package. The transportation charges for an Oversize 1 (OS1) package will be the same as a 30-lb. package being transported under the same circumstances.

FedEx: A package weighing less than 50 lbs. and measuring more than 108 inches in combined length and girth will be classified as an Oversize 2 (OS2) package. The transportation charges for an Oversize 2 (OS2) package will be the same as a 50-lb. package being transported under the same circumstances.

UPS: A package is considered "Oversize 2" (OS2) when its combined length and girth exceeds 108 inches, and actual weight is less than 70lb. For each OS2 package, the billable weight is 70lb.

Example:You are a vendor shipping (7) (OS1 cartons per the definition above). Total Shipment weight is calculated by using the applicable oversize carton indicator/definition i.e. (OS1,OS2). For our example, 7 cartons x 30lbs. (all 7 cartons are identified as OS1 or equivilant to 30lbs. each). Total shipment weight equals 210lbs. You should use this weight when determining the proper carrier on the "Neiman Marcus Routing Guide" page. You should refer to the second line where the weight range is 201-8000lbs for the identified carrier.

Shipment Manifest

The Shipment Manifest is a document generated by the shipper for a customer pertaining to store shipments that are shipped to a customer-specified intermediate location (e.g., distribution center, consolidator) with the individual cartons marked for specific store locations. This is commonly referred to as Ship To/Marked For Cross Dock shipment. The Shipment Manifest contains store level detail that typically includes store location numbers, store addresses, customer order numbers, number of cartons per order per store, and weight/cube totals.
